I'm trying to make a filter with natural materials. Filtering is done by chemical adsorption..at a point the material may reach its maximum adsorption capacity. Is changing the material the only option or can i do anything else to boost the adsorption capacity of the material?

actually you can keep the same material but in this case you need to remove the adsorbed elements. this procedure cab be achieved by passing an acid like HCl through the filter. repeating this procedure will remove more amounts of the adsorbed metals.
So is HCL enough to remove the adsorbed elements and bring back the adsorption capacity of different materials??

Dear Darwin, the yield of the desorption will certainly not be 100%. If your filter adsorbs cationic contaminants, you could also try to pass saline solutions through the filter. These solutions are more friendly than HCl and can regenerate the adsorbent without the potential hostility of HCl for your adsorbent.
