We are interested in testing the idea that exotic conifers (1) lower soil pH and that this (2) changes growth rates of native woody plants. We plan to collect soils from under exotic conifers and native woody species and grow native plants on these soils in a greenhouse. I am wondering what I can add to increase drainage to field collected soils that will not alter soil pH.? We usually add some cinder (being on a volcanic island) but I wonder have some affect I am not thinking of. More generally I wonder if soil pH can be expected to be stable in a watered greenhouse setting over time?
