The chlorophyll showed negative correlation and negative direct effect on grain yield of wheat under irrigated and heat stress conditions. What can be reason? Please explain?
There is no clear systematic research on the fate of chlorophyll content under moisture stress. Many scientist reported different results like,
increase in Chlorophyll content by Mensah et al. (2006) and Geravandi et al. (2009).
But many researchers (Kulshreshta et al., 1987; Majumdar et al., 1991; Kirnak et al., 2001; El-Tayeb, 2006) have also reported decrease in chlorophyll content under drought stress.
Some reports (Kyparissis et al., 1995, Schlemmer et al., 2005) indicated no change in chlorophyll content under drought stress.
In my view, it depends on how drought stress is impacting.
1. As, the drought stress induced, the relative water content of plant decreases and plant dry tissue content increases- this can be analyzed through biochemical method.
2. if you are using SPAD chlorophyll meter then it'll provide positive results for you. as the absorbances increases.
3. statistically, if you are working on different multiple genotypes, if the population configured with more number of tolerant lines or germplasm. and more over chlorophyll content is not only contributing to yield. its a factor or attributes since we work correlation on mean value.
*I request other researchers to discuss intensively on this topic.
To discuss, yes, of course. At this stage, I would be interested in a more detailed description of the experiment, which was outlined by Asha. Please could you share more information?
Miss Sera thank you for your response. We have conducted research on alpha lattice design. Heat stress condition was created by sowing wheat 1 month later than normal sowing so that reproductive stage and grain filling was coincide with high temperature of March. Chlorophyll content was measured by spad meter. First reading was taken after booting stage and was taken after 1 week interval for 2 times. Chlorophyll contents were reduced under stress condition. In coefficient analysis chlorophyll content was negatively correlated with grain yield. Some researchers such as (Ojha et al., 2018a) and (Rajput, 2018) also found negative correlation. But reason behind it was not mentioned. So I want to know the reason for negative correlation.
