I am looking to know what strain can be used as reference by its breakpoints to interpret Campylobacter susceptibility on antibiotics not recommended by EUCAST or CLSI.
I think the most important factor is MBC not MIC because MBC is determined first then the availability of the antibiotic (diffusion ability) could be taken in consideration after knowing each MBC (The final estimated concentration ) for each certain antibiotic
Hello, you can take Campilobacter jejuni for your interpretation. The highest levels of resistance were recorded for ciprofloxacin: 77.4% of Campilobacter jejuni isolates.
Really The high Zone diameter breakpoints for Campylobacter spp not always mean higher activity. The zone diameter is depend from several factors. Diffusion ability of antibiotic substance trough agar, Antibiotic activity of substance etc.
With disc diffusion I have no advice. If you change to broth microdilution, you may use the EUCAST PK-PD (Non-species related) breakpoints for an indication, whether your breakpoint translates into susceptibility or resistance. For using PK-PD (Non-species related) breakpoints it is recommended to check the wild type distribution of different bacteria against the antimicrobial in question (i.e. click on the MIC to open the data sheet). Keep in mind that inhibition in vitro does not necessarily mean efficacy in vivo. EUCAST recommends Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 as quality control. As a reference, I would suggest Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33560 (EUCAST quality control for disc diffusion).

Hi Fatima, I would use Etest under micro-aerophilic conditions and report MICs. You can buy a whole gamut of strips and choose what is relevant to your research.
Fatima, Here's a paper that gives you MIC breakpoints. They used Etest as I recommended in a previous post. You just need to control performance according to EUCAST guidelines. Thanks
