Yes you can: Any emission spectrum carries a lot of information about the emitting species or body (which is true, by the way, for all kind of objects, i.e. atoms, ions, molecules, solid state materials, or astronomical objects....), however, you should note the excitation wavelength, e.g. 254 nm or 365 nm for the sake of comparison with literature data.

What people mostly derive from an emission spectrum of solir state compounds are the emission peak maxima and FWHM, the centroid wavelength, the CIE1931 and 1976 colour coordinates, the luminous efficacy and so on....

For the calculation of the colour coordinates you can use the free Osram colour calculator. For the luminous efficacy, you have to normalise the spectrum and to integrate the product of the spectrum with the normalised human eye sensitivity curve for a daylight adapted eye (V(l) curve). The obtained value between 0 and 1 must be multiplied by 683 lm/W.

Hi, Meret Görgens,

but if you work with pure substances, perhaps you can also measure regular absorbance spectra, using common UV-visible spectrophotometers. The absorbance spectra of individual substances resemble (albeit not always) excitation spectra.
