I'm looking for a scientific reference that determines the BMI limit for underweight for adult males and females. Not the static BMI of 18.5 kg/m² as determined by the World Heath Organisation, but a specific cut-off value for men and women. I did find the values 19.1 for females and 20.7 for males (on an internet search), but no reference of where these values come from. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or should the value of 18.5 kg/m² be used for both sexes to determine underweight?
