The Aysén Region of Chile is bordered to the west, by an intricate ecosystem of Pacific fjords and channels, which are fed by the freshwater rivers and ice flows of the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields. Two important productive sectors for the Region are Salmonculture and Nature-Based Tourism.  Next week an important vote takes place to decide over a proposal from the Salmon Industry, which proposes to move into one of the last pristine areas of the fjords, bringing significant infrastructure and operations.  This would create impacts in the viewshed for tourism, placing salmon incubators in and around the glaciers and inlets, large vessel traffic, industrial ports, etc. It would also insert aquaculture (antibiotics, concentrations of fish, etc.) into an ecosystem that, until now, has not been impacted by industry. There are three protected areas in the sector, but, their scope does not extend to the sea. There are no tourism studies for this area evaluating the potential impacts, from a tourism aspect. I have been asked to inform decision makers of best-practices in tourism research relating to evaluation of potential impacts and multi-use conflict resolution.  I would appreciate your insights.
