They seize power to benefit themselves, their families and their close political allies.
Dictators usually come to power through some kind of violent struggle, rather than the peaceful passage of power that we take for granted in the United States. In modern times, it's not unusual to hear news stories about dictators being elected by their citizens, when in fact the elections are manipulated through intimidation of voters to ensure the dictator's victory. A cult of personality often surrounds a dictator, driven by myths - typically perpetuated by the government-controlled media - about the ruler that are designed to build him up in the minds of the citizens as an all-knowing divine being who is the only one capable of bringing prosperity to the nation. In cases such as the late Kim Jong-il in North Korea, the ruler is even worshiped as a god.

Never necessary. Complete leadership must involve a sense of responsibility that dictatorships conspicuously lack. Concerned essentially with power they lack intelligence, culture and talent, although erroneously consider themselves to possess all three in abundance. Usually stay in power by marginalising large sections of the population and killing others. There is no such thing as a benign dictator, just a gullible public.

The very dark parts of historical narratology are often about the uncanny maneuvers and acts of cruelty by heartless dictators. Dictatorship is a disgrace to democratic societies which strongly defy the absolute ruling of narcissistic rulers who feel free to decide for all members of the community. Societies ruled under a dictator analogously resemble a hijacked plane moving towards an indefinite destination.

Dictatorship as a political system means monopolization and arbitrariness in the exercise of power. Dictatorship is characterized by the absence of a division of power, repression of groups, political institutions, and competitive socialism
Dictatorship in this age are different from the past. Dictators are evolved into new form. There are still old style dictators. Old style dictators are usually ex-military chief or head of a single party or head of a monarchy. They use armed forces to sustain the regime or they outsource their legitimacy which means they are supported by an external power . On the other hand, most of the emerging dictators today are not using coercive state apparatus against their people. But they are very talented in creating consent of the majority. They are mostly populistic. They know how to gain the consent of the majority: suppress freedom of speech, freedom of the press, creating an external enemy or a "traitor" group (this can be ethnic or religious minority). The are good at neutralizing opposition figures or groups.Thew know very well how to use carrot and stick. In short dictatorship has transformed and pro-democracy ones need new methods to fight with this new form of dictators.

Pentti Linkola would have done well to examine the dictatorships of the past. Think of Mussolini or Hitler and consider the elegant demise of them both. Not to mention the human misery and horror that they produced.
One person cannot be omniscient, all-wise, all-informed, or all-representative of any population. Dictatorships are, and always have been, the options of power-hungry individuals who view their power and privilege as more just than the welfare of the people. Dictatorships, throughout history, are evil, unjust, easily corrupted, and usually end in utter catastrophic failure.
Amir, anyone who thinks they can dictate to spouses or children is probably a generation on the wrong side of history.
Looking back at some Countries that ousted dictators I wonder if they had a plan B. With its evils, its better to have a dictator leader than to be in a Country where everybody wants to take power by all means, in the name of democracy, which results to uncalled for chaos. Yet, a democratically elected leader by a million corrupted citizens, who have no interest of the Country at heart, but the vote token they have received, is not any better. Democracy must be accompanied by good deeds, high morals and selflessness to serve.
Antonio Gramsci wrote that dictatorship is the absence of consent to coercion. It seems to me that any dictatorship is a natural state of the political system, which is necessary for its stabilization. If we analyze the examples of dictatorships in the history of different countries, we can see that they lay the foundation for the institutional design of the state, as well as form the mechanisms for the functioning of the political system. However, the social and cultural consequences of dictatorships are usually dire.
