Dear colleagues, I am working on a project on research collaboration and would like to hear your tips for making research collaboration successful - and hopefully fun. What are your top three? We have all, no doubt, had a whole range of experiences from good to not so good. Please share your thoughts.

The tips from my research experience of leading research teams since 1993
1) to work only with persons who are more capable that you in at least one aspect (knowledge, connections, experience, patience etc.)
2) to have not identical but connecting psychological types (3-4 out of 16 MBTI's)
3) to find not too greedy collaborators as money for really interesting research always appear late and from an unexpected side.

Dear Louise, Just three? This an important question and can lead to a great discussion amongst us. Thanks for providing the opportunity to share ideas.
For innovative oriented research teams---
1. Pay attention to composition of team in terms of skills needed to do the work (design, method, analysis & interpretation) at a top level. For example, include at least 1-2 synthesizers who: (a) Ask good questions, (b) builds evidence-based logic & (c) knows what to do with anomalies within a data set .(at least one, no more than 2).
2. Essential to have a diverse team which has Interest in the views of others and works hard to integrate outlier ideas into the research process. (all members of team). A diverse team means that the interpretive lens is broader and can make inferences that take into account views & other sources of knowledge usually not involved in a research process or included in the development of new knowledge & policies.
3. Strong emotional boundary management: Focus on tasks and leaves personal criticisms out of the work process (all members of the team) for the purpose of meeting timelines and excellent product development
4. Comfort with making blunders & occasionally pressing the rules (75% of team). I find that these type of people are happier when working together on a specific well-defined project with tight deadlines. More playful group.
5. Good writers (at least 2 so that not just 1 person is relied upon for polishing the document.
6. Sense of humor and good imaginations (75% of team)

1. Get with someone who provides a good scope of the project/work.
2. Use a collaborative tool such as OneNote to provide immediate/long-term input.
3. Establish frequent follow up dates to ensure that everyone is handling their part of the project well.
