RMSE is probably the most popular means of measuring accuracy of DEMs. But one needs to have a reference and more accurate data to do the comparison. Reference data can be gotten from topographic maps or GPS observations. You can check our paper (Assessing the Vulnerability of an Industrial City to Predicted Sea Level Rise using SRTM and GPS Observations: The Case of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, International Journal of Geoinformatics,10(3):73-81 · SEPTEMBER 2014) for an example on this.
Hello! The accuracy of DEM depends of several factors, namely: density of points, interpolation method, spatial resolution (or cell size), complexity of terrain. There are some indices that you can use to validate the accuracy of DEM, such us, slope, curvature, aspect, ...but this validation is undirect, because you use products derived from DEM. The apropriate form to validate the accuracy of DEM is to measure some points (control points) in terrain and compare the elevation measured to the elevation of same points in DEM.
