How can an author write a good review paper that contains all the basic information as well as the current trends related to a topic? How many literatures should be included for a good review?
• The review article should be a critical, constructive analysis of the literature in a specific field (of your interest) through a clear summary, classification, analysis and comparison.
• It should be a scientific text which is based on previously published literature or data in the specific field. This means that you as the author of the review article are not going to include new data from your own tests or experiments.
The function of your review article should be:
• to organize literature in a clear way
• to evaluate literature in an objective way
• to identify particular patterns and trends in the literature in a specific field of interest
• to synthesize literature in a critical way
• to identify possible research gaps and recommend new research areas if applicable
Improving your topic 'library' is another important thing to consider. Don't simply collect 'all' papers and start writing. Frequently check the latest trends and papers of that topic.

If you are to write a systematic review, you should identify mesh key words for all the relevant areas and do a search using different data bases. Then you can further narrow down the research as you wish(selecting a time period etc.). Then you can go through the abstracts and select most suitable articles for the review and read the full texts of them. Read PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. It is very important to decide on a very specific(narrow) area to do the review.
Dear Mridusmita Sharma, a very important aspect to be considered when writing a review article is that it is timely and that is doesn't duplicate a recent review. Thus it is essential that you carry out a comprehensive literature search (e.g. through SciFinder) and make sure that no closely related review articles have been published in recent years. The number of references depends on largely on the research topic and which period of time the review intends to cover. Don't try to cover a too large field of research!
