I want to perform a gas sensing experiment. I have tried with pellets but could not succeed. I found people doing gas sensing by screen printing on alumina substrates. I have no idea about it. can I make thick films of my sample on the quartz substrate by screen printing for gas sensing? I want to check only surface resistance variation.
IN screen printing, normally the ultrafine oxide powders are mixed with a certain binder, and then spread out as a fine layer onto the substrate through a fine mesh.
But then you have to sinter at a higher temperature to get rid of the binder. The temperature depends upon the binder (polymeric material) used. So therefore you are left with an inorganic oxide layer.
Now doing screen printing onto tiny quartz substrate will a little tricky, but not impossible. Alumina substrates are inexpensive, and can be obtained with a larger size of 1 inch square. You can try both quartz and alumina substrates. So in a way you are making a thick film. In a similar way you have to put the electrodes also onto the finally sintered inorganic oxide layers.
Best way to see the screen printing process is to visit some of these shops in all cities which make wedding cards. Of course they paints. IN you case you have to make ultrafine oxide powders and mix them up with a suitable binder thorouhgly so that it passes through fine screen mesh used normally in the scree printing process.
