Referring to the upsetting (compression) test of smooth circular cylinder as shown in the picture, if there is a crack initiation on the surface of the material, Is there any experimental technique that can be used while performing the test to detect such crack initiation, as there involves extremely high plastic defomation?
The level of plastic strain will be so high upon compression at the moment when (if) there is a crack initiation. This means, attaching any sensors will start to malfunction or completely damaged upon severe compression during to very high plastic strain. Can anyone suggest other suitable methods?

Cracks or inhomogeneities in the materials can be detected by ultrasound techniques. So, you want to fall acoustic waves from an ultrasound transducer and receive the reflected waves by ultrasound detector. The variation of the received signal with time can be corelated with cracks and inhomogeneity in the materials.
