Dear, I agree with your suggestions. In addition to the above focus in my opinion global supply chain integration are becoming an important topics. Especially the new business trends of competition which changes the old trend of company alone competetiveness changed to supply chain versus supply chain. Therefore, here the big changes how we can integrate the firms in developing countries to the firms in developed world. Especially as source of major raw material in manufacturing sector, the firms in developing countries need to invetigated and research on mechanisms of integration up to the first part of suppliers. Especially incorporating the unique supply chain characteristics of the manufacturing firms in developing countries should be integrated uin different model so that we can have full integration, transparency and entire supply chain improvement.

in Germany the current hype is Industry 4.0 - the claim is that we currently experience the 4th industrial revolution: There was the first of course in the 18th century, then mass production, Ford and the like the second, numerical control the third and now, finally, what some authors call the age of machine decision: Autonomy, self-optimization, intelligent systems etc. Interdisciplinary for sure, and a lot of systems engineering, mehatronics etc. in it. Cyber-Physical Systems often pops up, too, in that context. The European Factories of the Future programme is related.

First, trends in manufacturing engineering and in industrial engineering are somewhat different. Manufacturing engineering deals with the technologies for producing tangible products. Industrial engineering, on the other hand, deals with ways and means for arranging the elements in a product realization chain, more or less independent of the technologies used for producing the goods. In other terms, manufacturing is a bottom-up view of product production, while industrial is a top-down view. So, trends in manufacturing: additive manufacturing; micro- and nano-processing (precision, machine rigidity, physical machine control and tooling are especially important sub-themes); autonomous machine operation; processing new engineered materials. Trends in industrial: global supply and distribution chains; integration of multinational part fabrication into uniform products; data management (e.g., DDM, cloud, etc.). Trends are generally relatively easy to follow through the various professional organizations -- e.g., in the US, SME and ASME Production Division for manufacturing; IIE and APICS for industrial. Other countries have similar and equally useful organizations.
Let me add another note or two for topics of coming interest in Manufacturing Engineering: While it is not quite at the trend stage as yet, molecular manufacturing is on the horizon -- fabricating products one molecule at a time. Another view of the future is that the breadth of products that are coming under the purview of Manufacturing Engineers continues to broaden. Much new demand comes from nontraditional sources -- industries making bio-medical implants, prosthetics, pharmaceuticals, a wide range of electronics, value-added food products, engineered materials, and others that appear quite unrelated to traditional manufacturing fields emphasizing metal parts. Quality research (and teaching) in these fields require stronger faculty foundations in basic and applied sciences, now including biology and organic chemistry.

First of all there are two different types of research. Innovation research and this targeting long term development (Future ideas),
AND research for short term development product and this medium to short term development (Less than 4 years).
Now days the industry are looking more into short term development ideas (Quick win topics) on the other hand universities trying to grantee long term fund by proposing innovation long term ideas.
Each university now is trying to establishing new labs and facilities without coming to contact with the industry which at the end “Should” invest into the new facilities established.
The future of research in manufacturing should grantee short term development / low cost production / light weight product / less assembly time. Thesis combination is very difficult to achieve without having the knowledge (Researchers) which know exactly what is the latest technology achieved by the industry and start from where the industry stop and not from other researchers ends.
Hence more researchers should have a strong industrial background in order to achieve their target of development in short term.
Beside new trends in manufacturing that mainly mentioned previously, there is a movement toward big data. This movement is resulted because of the movement toward nano. Big data analysis could be used in many disciplines of industrial and systems engineering.
A relatively new trend in design has been the advent of User Expereince - i.e. the consideration of how the interaction between the product and the user can elicit desireable emotions from the user. This interest stems from studies which show that emotions can influence use, purchase and re-purchase intentions.
Design and manufacturing require standard data models and protocols for data exchange to communicate with each other in an integrated environment. The protocols evolving under the umbrella of ISO 10303 (officially known as the STandard for Exchange of Product Model Data or unofficially known as STEP) are considered to be key information interfaces for the advanced manufacturing industry. The overall objective of STEP is to provide a mechanism that is capable of describing product data throughout the life cycle of a product, independent from any particular system.

Following up with Dirk Lehmhus comment, I think that Industry 4.0 is one of the major trends shaping nowadays research in manufacturing and industrial engineering domains. As said Dirk Lehmhus this “fourth revolution” about autonomy, self-optimization, and intelligent systems aims to increase agility and efficiency and to meet increasing individual customer requirements. In my view industry 4.0 is still in its infancy, but it is has already received much attention in some European countries like Germany and now in France which launched some initiatives about the French vision of industry 4.0, “Industrie du Futur”.
Iniciatives is in Europe many... I4.0 in Germany, Smart Industry in Nederland, Made in Sweden 2030 in Sweden, High Value Manufacturing in UK,... Last but not least we have Factories of the Future iniciative launched in 2008 by EC... I think all of this iniciatives has some similarities and some differences based on local conditions.

needless to say, I agree with Khaled Medini and Jozef Hercko regarding their stressing of the Industry 4.0 topic - also with Yuqian Lu's statement on the previous page on the importance of cloud manufacturing. Regarding the latter, we have recently published a paper highlighting potential links between cloud manufacturing (which I think would in general also fall under the broader Industry 4.0 and similar terms) and additive manufacturing, integrating also the design and development process and building on sensor integration to enable usage data feedback.

I agree, finding a set of future trends in particular disciplines would be the right thing to consider, and investigate before institutions make large investments into such strategies.
Based on my research in industrial and manufacturing engineering, I see few important research trends. Dirk pointed one of them earlier.
One such emerging trend, which I see most prominent in manufacturing industries, is the use of an Online web-enabled Product Development Strategies for Manufacturing?
This could be either cloud-based or web-based. Since both are driven by Large Data base and/ or Integrated tools in the background, productivity and accessibility are assured.

I think the question by Prof. Al-Ahmari is an open-ended issue. Although it is important for education and research institutions to define research strategies, answering this question depends on the goals of the research, and the objectives of the institution. Asking such a question to active researchers and engineers includes accepting a part of subjectivity in the answer: every one would try to promote his own area of research because s/he is convinced this area is important and worth investigation. :)
Considering industrial engineering, I think decision making, control architectures, embedded and emergent intelligence are an active and promising field of research. New technologies are promoting new paradigms such as internet of things, cyber physical systems, reconfiguration, etc. Such technologies enable inert material and machines to be able to become active, endowed with intelligence, and able to make decisions. This challenges the way we educate future engineers, and the way we manage production organizations. This shift calls for new organization, management and decision making structures that take advantage of existing available technologies to improve performance. One issue that is particularly worth investigation is how such available technology would enable dealing with risks, disruptions, disturbances, and change in general. I think investigating new, intelligent, and agile control architectures and decision making approaches to deal with disturbances and risks is an important and up-to-date trend of research in industrial engineering and manufacturing systems.

Today Industry are rapidly changing. Industry 4.0 is new standard for future Industrial and manufacturing engineering.
We have witnessed the technological transformation that is taking place before our eyes.The following four technology categories are already driving much of the change:

Manufacturing technology is evolving faster than ever before, and many of the technologies being introduced today will be commonplace within five or 10 years for sure. Acording to UNIDO (UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAl DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION) the following technology areas are emphasized:

The scientific comunity is missing the lost and small sister of the Physics of Energy which is called the Physics of Information. No matter how rapid is the development of all applications in connection with the Physics of Energy we go ahead within the 21st century assuming that the Universe is full only from Energy. It is not correct. The Universe is also full of information. The physicists who study the various and many branches of the Physics of Energy make the same mistake which the classical Physicsist did assuming that the Universe is empty of energy and information. This situation delayed progress by centuries. If we start dealing with the Physics of Information the true progress will start to go toward fruition for Science in a planetary mode.
