I want to know the reasons for peak tailing, or peak fronting in GC-MS and how can I avoid these in GC-MS analysis? Is there any chance to alter the ratio of Q-ion and C-ion due to peak tailing or fronting?
This is a very old question in chromatography. The answer to it remains not direct. Usually you'll find many reasons to tails or fronts but no single reason you could walk with.
Tails and Fronts can be caused by bad column, contamination (which could be in the injection port, gold seal, the first few centimeters of the column, etc.), contamination in the syringe, too high temperature in the injection port, etc. of reasons. You need to check these possible causes one after the other until you resolve your issue. Sorry!
