Prof. D G G P Karunaratne, Do you have any suggestions on this? I noted GaBi4 is widely used in environmental engineering and in industry over SimaPro. How is the usability and database support in environmental/chemical engineering field?

Dear Amila as already said it strongly depends on your project(and probably if your are willing to pay for a software or not (openLCA)). Maybe you could outline what you are expecting from the software; etc. Also don't forget it is one thing to have a software the other point is what kind of data/database you would like to use. Anyway there is no right or wrong LCA software (Gabi and SimaPro are both well established - in academia - at least from my experience Gabi is used quite often).

I get to know that my research team (which I recently joined) is using SimaPro.

our research works are more related to environmental engineering applications.

moreover, I have some feeling (after communicating with some research groups in South East Asia), Asian researchers are often use SimaPro (just my rough observation).

Anyway, yes, it seems all three, SimaPro, Gabi and openLCA gives productive outputs which can communicate in academia.

I came a cross a mother open source software for LCA named "Brightway2"

This is good for those how are planning to conduct research longterm. As get to know OpenLCA is an "substitute" for SimaPro. However, this Brightway2 offer new possibilities (need Python). However, once learn the thing, it is customizable as per the researches requirements.
