In the thread: Should professors jointly publish papers with students?, a separate issue has arisen where the obligations, tasks and recognition of the student supervisor have been linked with publication and authorship. Authorship has defined criteria, and single inputs such as funding, support or editing do not merit someone being named as author. Frequently however, people are saying that without these inputs, the student's work would never be published or they would not complete their dissertation, therefore 'authorship' provides payment in some form. It has also been expressed that supervision is not always accounted for in the job role (it is seen as 'extra' work), and the support/teaching component of the role is not as recognised or rewarded as the more visible marker of an impact factor publication (which can help attract funding & potential students to work on your research projects).
