Most at risk people for HIV/AIDS are hidden in the population because of stigma, illegality of their acts like injecting drug use etc., and therefore we can not count them by using direct ways like census. What are the most suitable ways then?
Dear Alii, searching for hidden and vulnerable populations is always a challenge for researchers. I don't think you can find a complete sampling frame for this particular at risk population. So, various methods could be a snowball sampling among the high risk groups i.e. FSWs and their clients, CSWs, MSM and IVDUs. You could contact the various agencies (governmental and non- governmental) working for the cause of HIV prevention in your study area to make a fairly reasonable estimate of the at risk population.
Indirect estimation among the high risk groups is applied. The stigma attached with HIV is decreasing in Tamil Nadu, Southern part of India. Tamil Nadu Aids control Society, Egmore, Chennai has contributed considerably [ways and means] towards estimation of high risk for HIV. lalitha kabilan
