As a common alternative, you should take two FTIR tests: 1- for pristine MWCNTs and 2- functionalized MWCNTs , with comparison two tests you can verify the presence your favorite functional group.

and if you are taking the FTIR test for MWCNTs on substrate or glass. Do make sure you take a pristine substrate without CNTs and take FTIR primary background. I do it all the time for our Bruker FTIR.
If itaconic acid is covalently bonded to MWCNT, FTIR is the easiest characterization tool. Perhaps you might also consider taking FTIR spectrum of a composite sample and compare that with Itaconic acid-functionalized MWNT.
OK, If you can get an XPS spectrum of your pristine and functionalized MWCNTs (after washing several times) you can approve it.
