I’m planning to treat a highly contaminated petroleum refinery wastewater of local petroleum refinery. I would like to work on a project focused on the Combined chemical oxidation and biological treatment of highly contaminated petroleum refinery or petrochemical effluents (recalcitrant or refractory compounds). The chemical process would be used as a pre-treatment in order to enhance the biodegradability index (BOD5/COD) of wastewater. I plan on reading some literature related to my work and perhaps find a gap for novelty in my thesis
Any prospective leads and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

How about plant–bacteria partnership? It has been extensively studied and applied to treat soil and water polluted with hydrocarbons. Application of effective plant–bacteria partnerships for the remediation of hydrocarbons depend mainly on the presence and metabolic activities of plant associated rhizo- and endophytic bacteria possessing specific genes required for the degradation of hydrocarbon pollutants. Plants and their associated bacteria interact with each other whereby plant supplies the bacteria with a special carbon source that stimulates the bacteria to degrade organic contaminants in the soil. In return, plant associated-bacteria can support their host plant to overcome contaminated-induced stress responses, and improve plant growth and development. In addition, plants further get benefits from their associated-bacteria possessing hydrocarbon-degradation potential, leading to enhanced hydrocarbon mineralization and lowering of both phytotoxicity and evapotranspiration of volatile hydrocarbons.

According to my opinion it is necessary to know, if the product free phase is present in the waste stream. If yes, then you have to start with physical treatment (efficient and economicaly feasible) for reduction of high concentrations of pollutants. Physical pretreatment can be followed by chemical oxidation and/or bioremediation.
To find bet solution it is necessary carefully evaluate pollutants which should be reduced!!!

Saeed, So, as Vit suggested, first of all think about plate separators and flotation. After that stage about flocculation/coagulation. At the end the water phase can be treated by AOPs. Remember, that in most of refinery WWT plants the AOPs are not used and the water phase is treated by biological processes. regards, G

Most of the organic constituents of refinery wastewaters, i.e. the non-branched aliphatic hydrocarbons and also a great deal of the aromatics are well biodegradable. Therefore, many refineries are equipped with biological stages for their wastewater treatment (after removing a great deal of the lipophilic constituents by simple mechanical pretreatment such as PPI, DAF etc.). It is thus not worth to spend a lot of energy for producing oxidants such as hydroxyl radicals in AOPs to break down the hydrocarbons. AOPs woud make sense for posttreatment when high quality effluents are required (e.g. for reuse). I fully agree with the answer of Grzegorz.
