Recent turbidite sediments are composed of sandy rhythmites and clayey rhythmites that alternate mainly with silt sized particles. I am interested to know the mineralogy of these types of sediments.
considering the heavy minerals there are no restrictions. As far as the light minerals are concerned minerals typical of evaporites and carbonate minerals such as Mg calcite and aragonite can hardly be expected because their environment of formation lies in the proximal shelf region near the coast. Among the clay minerals the members of the smectite group are rare in modern and absent in old turbidites (graywackes of Paleozoic age).
