I am developing an agricultural portal for a specific farmer's association and I need more highlight on what type of information to include in the portal
Soil and fertility status, weather information, plant nutrient application guidelines based on soil test values, irrigation and water application guidelines and package of practices for different crops, farming system models, processing and storage of farm produce, marketing etc. are the basic items to be added for the information portal.
you can also include extension services questions and answers where farmers can share experience and find solutions to address farm issues. It will be great to also include contact information of buyers (Marketing) and a profile of farmers field activities which should indicate when a produce can be harvested or ripe for consumers.
Have you looked at the Embrapa Portal? . It prioritized show our public information produced by us, whether in research, publications or products, processes and services. We also present sites that aboradam global problems such AIAF - International Year of Family Farming and the problem of lack of water on the planet . Our searches can be made by keywords / tags, and soon an agricultural terms glossary also.
I helped establish the www.onefarm.ac.nz website for Farm Business Management research from the NZ Centre of Excellence for Farm Business Management. OneFarm is a joint Massey University & Lincoln University project.
Our digital strategy was to communicate Farm Management directly to end users both advisers & dairy farmers. We aimed to create an active community around the website see blog post 31st July 2014 http://www.onefarm.ac.nz/community/blogs/onefarm/ Research was posted in many different ways as webinars, blogs, research papers & on twitter @onefarmnz
There needs to be new material on the website regularly (read weekly) in my view. The use of social media (twitter & facebook & blogs) was very important to bring the audience to the website. SM also enabled us to include & involve a different audience e.g. Ag degree students & postgrads (there have been 14 student bloggers.
Producers and merchants in the hop industry worldwide established in 1951 their global hop network - called International Hop Growers' Convention (IHGC) - pointing out on its home page the organisations's background, activities, membership, chosen statistics and a contact to the organisation IHGC's office (see: www.ihgc.org, @IHGCorg). As the general secretary of the IHGC since 1997 - I am updating the web site according to members' initiatives.
I think agriculture information portal should be developed to access the agriculture information in a convenient way. It should include links of varous technology and service providers, agriculture informaiton bank, farmers success stories etc.
Ezra, a portal for farmers association needs to consider making farmers and their information providers as better players in the policy process. Usually production, marketing and prices information are used for an agricultural portal. But increasingly farmers and their associations need to be engaged in the policy process. This requires bringing them up to date with what are the current policies are government and how the come about. When the international agencies are considering aid or developing strategy farmers need to participate. This portal could help in that process by being dynamic on that information sharing. Hope this is useful in addition to what is being said by others above.
Since you are developing the portal for specific farmer's association, think over the area of their interest such as their cropping pattern, type of crops grown by the group of farmers. Accordingly update the information portal with good agricultural practices, marketing information, pest and disease, their needs related to to their entrepreneurship etc.
Developing an agricultural information portal for farmers association should be directly proportional to the specific areas of the farming enterprise of the association. unfortunately, you did not specify which type(s) of agricultural enterprise. That information will assist in suggesting what and what should be included in the portal. Thanks
Government and Ministry regulation; technology news; market news; product news; computer programs news; opportunities of education and courses; opportunities of credit and investment; links to all the above sections; links to relevant organizations; the interface that enables connections with farmers and the management of the association, and participation in blogs.
Developing an information portal for an agricultural company shall be based on the knowledge and information needs of the members and how to link them with markets and relevant organisations. For instance if this association produces and processes a special agricultural product, then information and linkages that improves their production, processing and marketing will be highly required. Linking farmers to relevant organisations (links) will be helpful in this regards. The portal should also allow farmers to exchange experiences so as to allow them change their tacit knowledge to explicit one. Hope it will help you.
The information to include in the portal has to be based on the needs of members of the association. There is a need to conduct a needs assessment for members of this association. As part of your assessment, you might include other categories of information you think they may need as they may have some unfelt needs which if asked may trigger their need. It is after doing this that the content to be added to the portal may be decided upon. Best of luck.
