One of the key concepts is that of public sphere versus private sphere. The role or Arab/Muslim women is often reexamined to determine/uncover their level of participation of public spheres/ domains, such as social events, literary saloons, etc. This sometimes presents interesting discoveries into the level of freedom practiced by some women and the ways they negotiated the boundaries within which they lived- facts that have often gone unrecorded in official accounts of women's roles in these societies.
Ellen Rooney's The Cambridge Companion to Feminist Literary Theory is the most approachable guide available for both literature students and those new to field.
