If you want to use DCC, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, as coupling agent, waterfree DMF would be the best solvent. If you want to use an aqueous system you must use EDC, a water soluble carbodiimide. EDC is Me2N-CH2-CH2-CH2-N=C=N-CH2-CH3. You can neutralize it with an acid or you can make a quaternization at the aminogroup. Quaternized and neutralized EDC can be also bought from SIGMAALDRICH. You must look for water soluble carbodiimides in internet.
