4-hydroxybenzoate (4-HB) is the metabolic precursor of the redox active quinone ring in ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10). Textbooks say that, in humans, 4-HB is synthesized from L-tyrosine. My understanding is that the only evidence for this pathway is the existence of its intermediates in blood plasma. I have not been able to find any reference to the human genes that code for the enzymes in this pathway, and I'm wondering if it's possible we are, in fact, reliant on the gut microbiome for these reactions and 4-HB is actually a vitamin.
