My take would be that the lack of datasets as they mention is key. Also muti resolution using multiple neural networks could provide better discrimination of closely placed object of the same composition.

My take would be that the lack of datasets as they mention is key.
Additional research is needed in this area beyond what they mention in that this is an adversarial setting and as soon as the adversary learns of the detection technique he will most certainly deviate his behavior or deploy countermeasures. This would need machine learning techniques that are robust against such deviations, determining possible deviations as far as I know is an open area where much research is needed.
Aviation security requires a multidimensional problem solving and understanding. Any aviation security system should have a high level of accuracy in a fast and sensitive operational process with an acceptable cost. In addition, it shoul be user-friendly. ANNs are powerful tools for analyzing complex systems. Future researches on any new aviation security technology should be concentrated on finding an optimal balance of these requirements.
