I hope I'm understanding your question correctly, but one factor that I've been thinking a lot about lately is this idea of intellectual risk-taking. I think it's important to be comfortable "going out on a limb" from time to time in terms of thinking about a topic, issue, or problem in a different/unique way.

Yes, intellectual risk-taking is one of the issues that I meant in my question.
I think this has a lot to do with the education system, curricula and professional communities-after graduation.
Ok good, lol. And yes I hear you. I would also suggest there is a home/cultural element to this as well, where children can be encouraged at an early age to take these kinds of risks, and not to settle. Do you know of any research that deals with intellectual risk-taking specifically? I would be interested in reading some. If not no worries, as I can also do a search and stop being lazy, lol.
Process drives behavior. All children are intellectual risk-takers in that they develop explanations based on a limited basis of information. Now the question is....how do we (the education system) react to it. We can tell them that they are wrong and have not learned enough yet to come to the right conclusion or we can analyze their conclusions and react to the thought process that lead to them, in which case we encourage them to refine the thought process and ultimately reach original conclusions.
