People with dementia / Alzheimer's Disease show increased aggressive behaviour as the disease develops. Common understanding to my knowledge is that this has to do mainly with the mental status of the patients, for example that they are mentally absent (not aware of their environment) and suddenly realise e.g. an unknown person in their room.

I wonder, if there aren't neurological or other physiological changes related to dementia / AD that influence the emotional processing on a physiological level?

I would be greatful for pointers to relevant literature/studies and value your comments on this!
