Artificial intelligence is already used in many places by social media companies. AI algorithms monitor user comments. AI also analyzes images and their underlying patterns on social media platforms. The massive use of chatbots and virtual assistants is another example of the use of (more or less) intelligent tools. The use of AI to analyze the very large amounts of data that accumulate on social media platforms will certainly even increase in the future.

Currently Facebook, started a campaign called 10 years challenge. Where they are collecting facebook users pictures. What I studied they are going to train their AI face recognition system. I am afraid this is an invalid question. It is premised on technological determinism - the idea that the effects of the technology are based on its functional capabilities. This is an outdated perspective. The effects of a technology are determined by how specific instances are designed, how they are operated, the social dynamics they are involved with, and all the other factors humans bring to owning, deploying and using them.

All ICT's are socio-technical systems, including AI and social media. The impact will not be determined by what the technology is, but how people use it. The technology inhibits or promotes certain forms of use, but that's about all.
