I will be curious to hear what people have to say about current technology using Automatic Speech Recognition, since most previous versions have relatively high error rates. In particular, although an error rate of 5% may initially seem low, it amounts to an error every 20 words, or approximately one error per sentence.
One alternative to transcribing is to code directly onto audio or video files. In this approach, a segment of audio or video can be marked with a code in the same way that a segment of text would be in a traditional approach.
One of my former doctoral student colleagues used the programme Transana to analyse video recordings. She did not use content analysis but another qualitative method but I do not think that the method is the central point of your question but rather the use of a programme to help with analysis.
I am pretty sure that she did not make transcripts of what was said in the recordings oiutside of Transana, everything was made in Transana.

If you want to avoid doing translating and verbatim transcripts, you can do coding of video and audio files using NVivo or ATLAS.ti softwares (if you have subscription).
