Do you mean explicitely "obturation", as the technical quality of the obturation/filling/sealing of the root canal, or do you mean "obturation", as a description for the whole treatment, in the end the (clinical or radiographical or clinical and radiographical?) success? Or success on the level of histology?

As far as Dentistry is concerned, a good method of root canal obturation is to seal the primary as well as accessory and lateral canals, which can be achieved by using thermoplasticized gutta percha obturation techniques. But the point to be considered for a well done obturation is to make sure proper cleaning and shaping of the root canal has been done to make sure root canal debris as well as smear layer is removed from the root canal walls to ensure penetration of sealer and gutta percha into the lateral canals.

However, we have to distinguish experimental from clinical results. What you mentioned and which seems to be logical and supported by thousands of experimental studies could not be proven in the clinical situation. For example, the results are the same whether the root canal is irrigated with saline or NaOCl or whatever (Cochrane review 2012). Thus, there seem to be other, more important factors influencing the clinical outcome; I therefore would like to see more clinical studies than another experimental one. Unfortunately, the importance of studies seems to be reciprocally proportional to their number...
