Extraordinary question, I share my opinion from my perspective of seeing the problem globally. First; It is necessary to have a more participatory, supportive and equitable society where material poverty is no longer a cause of environmental degradation as it happens today in the great cities of the world where poverty belts surround the city with its threat of violence, misery and all the evils generated by economic vulnerability. The first thing to do is to have equitable, supportive and participatory social systems. Secondly; there is to guarantee the deconcentration of the basic health services of the great centers of the cities, it is not possible to continue concentrating the health care or education in certain places, we must guarantee them for all. Obviously, these services must first be guaranteed. In third place; We need an urban transport system that guarantees mobility to citizens, with quality and affordable prices. This would undoubtedly lower the use of cars at peak times in the cities. In this same sense, it is mandatory to move to the use of ecological cars that use alternative technologies, this would significantly lower pollution. In fourth place; Cities must be organized to make better use of urban space, especially I think it is necessary to increase green spaces and to start producing food in cities using the advances of science and technology and using organic waste to produce fertilizers. In fifth place; We need to educate people's needs, we cannot continue to irrationally consume products without looking at nature, in many cases products harmful to man. Current production models need men who consume more and more every day, nature depletes every day its ability to naturally recycle waste. We have to educate the satisfaction of human needs, trying not to harm the big companies that dominate the markets in the world, but making human consumption more rational. If we were able to do things like that we would be changing the landscape of the big cities of the world today.
Twenty years ago, OECD published Cultivating Rural Amenities: An Economic Development Perspective. In much of the world, cities may be crying out for health (and other things) but providing urban infrastructure (and other facilities) to rural areas and so creating economic (and other opportunities) outside of cities would help stem the rural-urban migration and consequent aggravation of living conditions in cities that Naushad Khan refers to.
