I was reading that there was a strong interest in the development of solid-state batteries and solid electrolytes (SEs). However, a limitation reported in several studies is the solid-solid interface. What are the new perspectives on this issue? Also, are there any other limitations?

in the following paper byTan, D.H.S., Banerjee, A., Chen, Z. et al. "From nanoscale interface characterization to sustainable energy storage using all-solid-state batteries." Nat. Nanotechnol. 15, 170–180 (2020), the authors outline four considerations that should stay at the forefront of solid-state battery development, namely: stable chemical interfaces between electrolyte and electrodes, effective tools for characterization, sustainable manufacturing processes and design for recyclability.

The biggest challenges in solid state batteries are the poor interfacial contacts between the electrodes and the electrolyte (cathode/electrolyte interface, anode/electrolyte interface). There are several other issues like bulk resistance of the solid electrolyte, thermal stability, cyclic stability and electrochemical stability.
