Technology is changing fast and wayfinding indoors up until now has lacked a good solution. Beacons and the such like have been considered for making it possible to have a GPS style feature indoors but as yet seem to work whereby they pinpoint users accurately. What solutions are out there?
there are some researches on building "accessibility" using 3D laser scan technology.
In my experience the most accurate technology is UWB. RSSI based systems are not so accurate.
RSSI based Sytems work fine with fingerprinting, to an accuracy of about 1 meter, but to our experience is feasible only for environments where
- the signal strength of the access points are fixed and not variable. This may or may not be known or even under your influence.
- no varying amounts of people or other obstacles cause a rapidly varying patterns of received signal strengths.
Best is never to get in the need. Design buildings that are legible.
Google's Tango has indoor wayfinding capabilities but currently apps for it are currently relatively scarce. The earlier implementation was in a tablet, I believe they've now incorporated the sensors into a couple mobile phone models.

Very interesting regards Google Tango and wayfinding. Does this mean, i wonder, if we'll have hundreds of people in museums looking downwards at their phones and walking into us as presently is happening more and more in the streets. We seem to be devolving!
Haha, no, the museum aspect is more for augmented reality experiences within a given space (as opposed to wayfinding). The devices could *in theory* detect an object or structure approaching and alert a user to avoid collision though so perhaps we will see an evolution in that sense!
The benefits of digital wayfinding are undeniable. From improving patient experiences in hospitals to supporting the omnichannel retail experience in shopping malls, indoor wayfinding brings a competitive advantage across multiple industries. However, while the benefits are clear, the process of planning and selecting the appropriate wayfinding technologies can be a daunting task.
