There are many techniques based on pre-defined shapes, neural networks, etc. Some simple based on watershed and erosion cycle. Anything recent and user friendly?

to aid you understand the wealth of algorithms, tools etc.: there is hardly a thing like the leatherman in image analysis. This applies for algorithms as well as tools.
The choice of analysis technique greatly depends on the type of scene, properties of objects ('particles' in your case) vs. properties of the "background" etc. pp.
Choice of tools is mostly influenced by availability, cost, performance - or simply by personal preferences :) Aside from the performance point, nothing is to be regarded 'absolute' when choosing the tool.
Defining the properties of your specific application, then comparing to sample applications of the different algorithms, should give you a hint which algorithms to consider.
Regarding the tools: what's available ? what are you already familiar with ?

thank you Mr Dreher. yes 100% true sometimes it is more the technique of acquiring the image that has more influence etc. I just wanted to know new tools that some may recommend, or that have been proven to work very well, with maybe examples based on each person's experience. Mostly particles, objects, etc with different shapes and sizes within an image.
