Would anybody share any suggestions and recommendations regarding the thermal evaporation of temperature sensitive organic conductive compounds, e.g. pentacene, for experimental preparation of functional electronic structures (diodes, OFETs etc.)?
I think this shared knowledge could help a lot of people in the beginnings of their experimentation with this class of insoluble functional organic materials.
Please share your valuable gained experiences with:
- thermal evaporation process of organic conductivities deposition,
- particular heating elements, evaporation sources,
- issues related to film quality,
- suitable substrates and their preparation, cleaning.
Organic semiconductors can be deposited in the film form through several techniques including spin coating and thermal evaporation. To deposit through thermal evaporation heat the material slowly and keep a low deposition rate to start with. Low deposition rate will produce a better quality film. Only those organics can be deposited as a film which do not dissociate readily and can be sublimed. Cleaning treatment depends upon the choice of the substrate. Plasma cleaning is normally possible with thermal evaporators and can be performed. These organic materials are normally in powdered form and can be used as loose powder or a compact. Heating is normally resistive using molybdenum, tantalum boats.
Any good book on thin films or thermal evaporation can provide all this information in detail.
