I wanted to use a method involving the use of Heptadecanoic acid and BF3 methanol but the ragents are not within my reach? I am if there is an alternative question that will be straight forward and easy but will not include the use of the reagents mentined since they are currently out of my reach?
what exactly you want to do ? actually you have to select the proper column with proper mobile phase according to your procedure. it's depends on you ..
The main point is what you are analyzing for in the oil. This will suggest the appropriate detector and column. The issue of solvent requires considerations: compatible with the GC, can it dissolve the oil, and also on the boiling point since GC separation depends on variation in the boiling points. You can actually find a number of solvents that can do your work not limited to the two you have mentioned above. May be you could simplify your question by telling of what you want to analyze from the oil. At least it will give an insight of the polarity of the solvent required etc.
Hi, for esterification you can use this simple procedure: The acid is dissolved in methanol and titrated with 24 % tetramethylammonium hydroxide in methanol to phenolphthalein.
