Dear Researchers,
Can you help me with some suggestions of how to use opinion mining results to enhance smart cities effectiveness in any of the eight city aspects (smart governance, smart energy, smart building, smart mobility, smart infrastructure, smart technology, smart healthcare and smart citizen) ?
I'm not looking for a tool,
in other words my question is how can we apply opinion mining inside smart cities? can opinion mining be of any help for smart cities? any ideas any suggestions?
In Wikipedia smart city is defined as "A smart city (also smarter city) uses digital technologies to enhance performance and well-being, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens".
The last part - "engage more effectively and actively with its citizens" can be effectively done with the help of opinion mining. Organizations involved (like NGOs, Govt ..) can perform openion mining on the feedback data available for the many services (like transport, library etc., ...). The most important thing for this is to identify the potential sources where feedback data is available. Many time there may not be explicit data available as feedback. So, identifying the right sources for the mining opinions is important.
It is also important to know what kind of questions are you going to ask here. For smart cities, you might have to identify what are the important topics which are important to "engage more effectively and actively with its citizens". This involves the cultural aspects of the society.
As far as I know, opinion mining is usually dealing with textual data. Alternately, smart environments are usually driven by sensory configurations producing variety of data from heterogeneous data sources. The basic purpose of collection of these sensor data streams is to discover those hidden patterns than can help in improvement in governance and management of smart-cities.
In this scenario, opinion mining, if harnessed with sensor data streams, can play a significant role in getting implicit opinions to improve the cities.
For each of your eight topics you train a classifier that recognizes the particular topic. Next you scrape all posts and comments from facebook fanpages that is matched by the classifiers and use these comments and posts for generating ideas yourself...
You can use opinion mining for example to extract public opinion about some issues or policies to. This can applied to any related domain.
Opinion mining in a smart city can help the government of the city to improve the quality of governance over the people.
