the advantages are obvious, produce fresh water from sea water it a relevant issues in many countries which haven't enough water resources. The desalinization process is very expensive. it is highly energy consumer and that the reason of its cost. When energy renewable is employed in desalinization process you don't need to have a classical power plant near and you can produce fresh water disengaged of the electric network.
For desalination solar energy is used, which is a renewable energy source. The desalination plants are constructed near the seashore with plenty of sun shine. The saline sea water is processed in the desalination plant using sun light, resulting in the production of potable water with no emission of green-house gases, thus protecting the environment. At present, however, these plants are very expensive but in future with an advancement in the technology the cost is expected to fall significantly.
The benefit is to compensate for the shortage of water required for drinking and other uses, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions.
