Metamaterial based structures exhibit unique EM properties that have led to a wide range of applications in antenna and propagation fields. Such structures prevent the propagation of EM waves in a certain frequency band. Therefore, these can be used to block surface waves that usually corrupt antenna performance. When Metamaterial structures interact with EM waves, different electrical properties are observed at different frequencies. Periodic structures (like EBG) pass certain frequency bands, reject some frequency bands, and behave like a magnetic conductor in a band of frequencies, known as the bandgap. These structures can also be used in your antenna array design to decrease coupling between adjacent antenna elements, helping to eliminate blind scan angles.

If the design is geometrically symmetric and the feed lines' paths are kept equals in length. So, using phase interface to control the mutual coupling is not applicable here. However, the phase interface can be used by make vertical shift or increase the horizontal distance between the 2-elements patch but then the volumetric size of the antenna will increase. Therefore, the metamaterial structure is used to reduce the coupling between the symmetric 2-elements patch keep the antenna size as compact as possible.

The cool thing about MTMs is their size, they don't occupy that much space in your design and still can achieve the performance.
