The biggest advantage of Endnote is the enormous world-wide community of users. Like all referencing tools, Endnote has bugs but there is such a mass of users worldwide that are present and active online, it is very rare you spend more than a few minutes browsing discussing chats before findings the simple fix. The user community and its collective user experience is the greatest selling point.

Mendeley is open source (for free). Endnote is commercial (for money).

I use Microsoft word>References> Manage Sources as personal digital library and citation and references generation. Excellent!. I used EN many years ago.

Concerning the quirks you mentioned, I realise it is a severe problem because it can be solved provided that you take more steps. However, some bugs on Mendeley cannot be dealt with even when I comply with more steps.

Additionally, the customer service and technical service on the Mendeley is good. I am willing to try to learn it based on your recommendation.

Regarding entering and storing the data, initially, the reason I used Mendeley was that Mendeley is accessible to store the data. However, Mendeley has some bugs in demonstrating the citation and laying out the reference list.

Finally, I am looking forward to you finding new ways to present source material to support your discussions. It will be very helpful to others with relevant questions.

Thanks for your answer. I am still unfamiliar with EndNote. I knew it lately because I am a Mendeley user. I have used Mendeley since I began studying for my master’s degree because senior students and my classmates at my school suggest the software and it is handy. However, recently I found Mendeley made many errors, and I must check my article after I finish editing the article.

I am surprised that there are enormous numbers of users in the EndNote community because no one around me uses EndNote. I understand that all referencing tools have bugs. Currently, the reason that I am considering whether to use EndNote instead of Mendeley is that Mendeley has some unfixed bugs that are annoying to me, and I must take additional time to check each citation and the bibliography. It is inefficient. Hence, I hope to get software where I do not need to check references individually after setting up. I will try to use EndNote before the license expires.

Yes, it has a wide user base. Many very large campuses around the world have institutional licences and provide their student with a user licence. It ends up being a little like the Apple community: lots of online support from fellow users and lots of forums where quick fixes are discussed

Microsoft reference management in terms of having to enter the document manually is necessary. At the beginning, it is hard, but step by step it is good enough for the manage sources.

This is an ideal way to use Microsoft reference management, even though the document has to be entered manually. Therefore, if I have sufficient time, I would use the management to manage my sources.

For example, the statistical software SPSS is not better than R. Thus, the matter comes down to choosing the one that suits me.

For research, we need not a lot of papers as a reference for a research paper development, in particular in the research field. Therefore, I have built my own digital library for more than 10 years. Then I need not to insert a number of references to the library manually.
