Mixed methods research is a methodology for conducting research that involves collecting, analysing and integrating quantitative (e.g., experiments, surveys) and qualitative (e.g., focus groups, interviews) research. This approach to research is used when this integration provides a better understanding of the research problem than either of each alone.

By mixing both quantitative and qualitative research and data, the researcher gains in breadth and depth of understanding and corroboration, while offsetting the weaknesses inherent to using each approach by itself. One of the most advantageous characteristics of conducting mixed methods research is the possibility of triangulation, i.e., the use of several means (methods, data sources and researchers) to examine the same phenomenon. Triangulation allows one to identify aspects of a phenomenon more accurately by approaching it from different vantage points using different methods and techniques. Successful triangulation requires careful analysis of the type of information provided by each method, including its strengths and weaknesses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of mix method research?

In respect of the complement, completeness, development, expansion, confirmation, compensation, and the diversity tendencies of the findings, the researchers have to consider the consumption of their research resources in the implementation. The consequence of such triangulation method will inevitably consume more resources rather than the single one.

It depends on what field of study you are in. For science-field the qualitative researches sound necessary. But for social science (analytic political science) it seems more damaging than useful. Of course, in the simple and common subjects such as votes, percentage-studies and so, using the quantitative measurement is popular. Just for the deep analysis, and the intricate convoluted matters of socio-psychology and anthropology, merely using mathematical results could not be a true expressive & indicator of the condition. The difficulty of mixed methods is well known, but some researchers use the quantitative- research along with couple of tables, graphs or figures, to enrich their study from both perspectives.     

I differ a bit. In social studies we need quantification of facts as well. When you have information from qualitative study which may reflect opinions, feelings, attitude and experiences, it may give you an opportunity to find out the magnitude of the problem at hand. Then, you can derive your quantitative study from the qualitative patterns, themes and categories of the results.

Again, from quantitative studies one may look at the the frequencies and percentages and try to determine the reasons and explanations of such data. you can move from a micro study to a macro one or vice versa. If a study reflected for example attitudes and experiences, a good researcher can further determine the level of such attitudes and experiences through quantitative research. Anyway, it depends on the purpose and objectives of your study and the reason why such a study is embarked upon.

I would also add that mixed methods helps in understanding the complexity of social issues and concerns. Quantitative methods will give a descriptive picture of a phenomenon of interest. The use of qualitative methods will help in explaining the phenomenon. Succesful use of mixed methods, however, will also depend on how the study is designed in such away that the methods inform each other.

Well, I also had a confuse like that, but the main thing is, we can´t forget that one thing is the TYPE of research and other things are the "TOOLS" we used during the process. My research is cualitative, but I will used one cuantitative tool for found a part of the information that I need, and using that tool don't made my research "MIX", because all results will be analyzed as cualitative method.
