Conference Paper Green infrastructure: a new paradigm for developing cities

Climate change causes vulnerability of human settlements which is related to extreme weather events and such gradual changes in the climate exceed the adaptive capacity of human systems. Climate change adds to the existing stress on the sustainability of human  settlements and society. Non climate sources of change like rapid urbanisation are often the main source of stress.

“Rural areas”, where rural “ends” and urban “begins”. The dividing line is blurred. Rural areas are often referred to as those areas outside of the city or urban boundary or periphery where populations are spatially dispersed. Agriculture is the main economic activity that provides job opportunities. Rural Livelihoods are often drawn from agriculture, livestock, forestry Livelihoods drawn from labour markets within non-or fishing.

Classification of Houses

Permanent houses: Houses- the walls and roof of which are made of permanent material.

 Semi-permanent houses: Houses in which either the walls or the roof is made of permanent material.

 Temporary houses: Houses in which both the walls and roof are made of materials that needs  to be replaced frequently.

 Serviceable temporary houses: Temporary houses, in which the walls are made of mud, unburnt  bricks or wood.

 The assessment began by arriving at the projected figures of Households, Housing Stock, Pucca Houses, , Serviceable Temporary Houses and Unserviceable Temporary Houses

In rural areas, the three types of schemes may be used

(i)                EWS rural housing schemes for landless persons

(ii)              EWS rural housing schemes for land owning persons and

(iii)            the village abadi scheme including house repair

 A number of environment-friendly, energy-efficient, cost-effective building materials and components have been developed . The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research Laboratories, particularly the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), have devised a wide range of technologies for low cost housing and innovative building materials, components and systems.

Thanks for sharing information on HUDCO,NHB,CBRI, NDMA, BMTPC NECTAR. Here i want to add work by NEERI during major flood in Bihar and make affordable house and drinkable water. NDMA shape itself after Bhuj earthquake and also Latur. Your detailed discussion solve many question in my mind. I will appreciate if you please give some suggestion on green material and green house which are earthquake resistance. I have attended a conference by BMTPC and NBCC on the same issue.

Masonry Buildings with Earthquake-Resistant Components

Flash sand lime bricks, Clay Fly-ash Burnt Bricks, Fly-ash Based Light Weight Aerated Concrete Walling and Roofing Blocks, Cement Bonded Fiber Roofing Sheets, Clay Red Mud Burnt Bricks, Gypsum Based Ceiling Tiles, Panel Blocks and Door/Window Shutters, Pre-cast Stone Blocks, Pre-cast Hollow Concrete Blocks, Pre-cast RCC Door and Window Frames, Pre-cast Plank and Joist ,looring/Roofing, Hollow-Pan System are other cheaper construction materials. If rice husk is easily available, rice husk ash is a cost effective building material.

Seismic fabric holds the walls together during a short and moderate earthquake, unlike naked, unsupported walls that are more vulnerable to cracking and falling off.  For occupants trying to flee a building during a quake, Sisma  Calce can no doubt buy them some time, lessening the chances of falling debris that can hurt them and block their path.

Due to the lightweight and favourable elastic properties of bamboo & wooden buildings made from it are very good at resisting earthquakes.

The Earthquake Lime in Italian is a seismic fabric made of glass fibers and elastic polypropylene fibers that can be applied on exterior walls using a special plaster.

Base isolation Pads

If possible, try to have any new constructions built on base isolation pads as these will absorb most of the vibrations and limit the damage caused to your home.Base isolation pads are most commonly made from lead and rubber which is sandwiched together with layers of steel and attached between the base and foundations of your house. In the event of an earthquake, the base isolation pads will move because of the shaking beneath them but because they will absorb most of the vibrations, your home should remain relatively still.

Base isolation pads are more commonly found in high rise or multi-level buildings.
