I came across parameter estimation and optimization course during my post graduation, which heavily relies on statistics and I found that one interesting. I would like know to know which are the recent research trends in control engineering, which uses probability and statistics?
A fascinating field. There are several books on this subject. You need to search under "stochastic control systems," or variants of that. The goal is to take into account uncertainty in noise levels and/or uncertainties in the control system's input signals.
Depending on the application, this can become controversial. People don't like automatic controls to be unpredictable, but that's in essence what you will achieve here.
I'll give you a controversial real-world example: autonomous cars. Cars can be designed to drive themselves, using a combination of on board sensors, GPS, and preferably vehicle to infrastructure communications (traffic reports, road conditions, and so on). The problems occur when such cars drive on public roads, with manually driven cars in the mix.
If the autonomous driving algorithms are "perfect," and inflexible, that autonomous car will become almost useless. For example, it will stop or veer sharply, if the car next to it crosses even slightly over the lane marker, assuming that other car has suddenly changed lanes. Or at an intersection with stop signs on all sides, the autonomous car will wait for cars in all directions to be stopped.
And yet, human drivers frequently drift over their lane marker, even if just slightly and briefly, and almost never stop completely at a stop sign.
So to make autonomous cars useful in mixed scenarios, you need to do some clever statistical analysis of a combination of inputs, to make non-deterministic decisions. Just like human drivers do.
@Kirill I have skimmed through some of the adaptive control schemes like Model Reference Adaptive Control and Gain Scheduling. But they do not seem to use concepts of probability and statistics. Please shed some light on it.
