I’m a researcher, and I have found some ways to reduce lead, and magnesium but for sodium, cadmium, iron, zinc, and mercury which are very toxic, that I haven't found it yet and some of the people from my island are eating sea salt from this area. We test it through AOAC 999.99. Except for USEPA 245.6 for a lead. So I’m trying to figure out a way to remove these toxic minerals and separate them from good ones for making a model design in my country.
Salt usually contains over 95 % of sodium chloride. So removing sodium will lead to another product. Reduction of salt intake is the usual approach to reduce possible adverse effects such as high blood pressure.
In addition to my previous answer I want to point out that sodium, iron, magnesium and zinc are (in low to medium doses) essential for correct functioning of the human body.
A total diet study will show whether lead, cadmium and mercury in the seasalt do contribute significantly to the total intake and thus should be reduced to protect the locals.
I would not be surprised, when other dietary components would contribute much more and thus might be a better goal, when trying to reduce exposure of the local population on Samoa.
