Woolley and Shaw (1954) noting the structural similarity between 5-hydroxytryptamine aka serotonin and LSD hypothesized that LSD somehow blocked the action of serotonin and that serious mental illness was due to low serotonin. Since then, we know that there are many serotonin receptors; that there are both presynaptic auto receptors as well as postsynaptic receptors; that serotonin receptors interact in complex ways with other receptors such as metabotropic glutamate receptors--is there a consensus (other than that somehow serotonin is involved) re: the mechanism(s) of action of LSD?
