A great deal of work has been done in artificial life regarding the implementation of artificial ecologies and organisms. However, and as classical examples Avida and Tierra stand out, the general trend observed in those artificial worlds is the "simplification" of organisms (parasites, hyperparasites and so on). My question would then be, which implementations show and increase in complexity, not only at the ecological level but at the organism level? Have we seen the emergence of new levels of organization like those seen in the evolution of our biosphere?
