I am attempting to start a class for parents and their children at my school to help parents practice Spanish literacy and read in the home (in Spanish) with their children.
In L2 acquisition, some researchers, e.g., (Hayes-Harb, Nicol, & Barker, 2010), caution that language teachers need to consider carefully whether both spoken and written forms of words should be presented to learners in the early stages of L2 vocabulary teaching, in view of the possible interference effects by L1 orthography upon learning the phonological forms of new L2 words. So my suggestion is, give them only sounds first, then when learning proceeds, give them the written forms. I am looking forward to other replies.
Thank you for your answer Matthew. My students are learning the letter names and sound for the English letters, so I don't really have the luxury of not giving them written forms. They are getting them from the kindergarten curriculum. They learn some English sight words and then use inventive spelling using letter sounds to write words and sound out simple words using the sounds the know.
Music and lyric elements may help to gain vocabulary and improve pronunciation and intonation. See María Elena Walsh songs. I grew up with her songs and stories taken to movies.
