Pott's disease mostly involves areas around the Inter vertebral disc and can gradually extend to involve whole vertebral body. Tuberculous detritus can spread to pre vertebral area. Severe disease can lead to epidural extension of the pus.
Potts disease, also known as tuberculous spondylitis is usually secondary to an extra spinal source infection. Osteomyelitis and arthritis are its common combinations and they usually involves more than one vertebra. The infection spreads through the vertebral disks to involve multiple vertebrae and extends into the soft tissues forming abscesses. The most affected anatomical structure is the vertebral body that is adjacent to the subchondral plate. The source of infection is usually outside the spine and most often spread from the lungs via the blood.
