What are rapid method to homogenize pseudoparenchymatous red algal tissue?

Hi all,

Has anyone ever successfully homogenized algal tissue with a bead beater? I am interested in phycobilin concentrations in the pseudoparenchymatous tissue of Mazzaella splendens. I've always accomplished this with the liquid nitrogen mortar and pestle method. However, I have many samples to process and am limited by time. So I am looking for faster methods of equal or better extraction ratios. Thank you for any advice you can provide! :D

A bead beater works well with algae in suspension--e.g., Chlorella. You might have to do successive breakdown: slice into pieces, use a blender (same as in the kitchen), then beads. Keeping everything cold. DIW may help burst cells as well.
